The Latest Diet craze now-a-days is the Keto Diet. But the question is, Is it really practical?
Keto or Ketogenic diet is a diet which is low in carbohydrates, moderate in protein and high in Fats. has helped a lot of people with controlling their diabetes, epilepsy, Parkinson’s etc.
But the questions arises - How practical is the Keto diet?
A lot of people who have been following Keto would never agree if anyone criticized the diet. Though it is effective in many ways, from a broader perspective it is a very impractical diet.
Here a few reasons why:
Requires a lot of discipline: This Diet is something which is not simple and needs at least 10 days for your body to reach a state of Ketosis. It is not something which you can go on and off. It needs to be followed very strictly in order to see results. With the busy lifestyles that we all have these days, it is quite difficult to adhere to the Keto diet.
It is time consuming: Unlike with any other diet, you will have to spend time preparing your own food. You cannot trust your cook/maid to do it correctly. If you are a working individual, you are definitely going to fall short of time.
Difficult for Vegetarians: The Plant sources of protein are legumes and pulses, but they are also quite high in carbs which does not really help while following a Keto Diet. This leaves vegetarians with very few options to choose from.
Side effects: Those who follow the Keto diet will initially go through a lot as their body adapts to the changes. Even after that stage passes, there are long term effects like kidney stones, nutrient deficiency and other cardiovascular disorders.
It can cause cravings: A lot of people are fooled into thinking that they can eat all the fried chicken, cream and cheese that they want. But, the diet is also extremely restrictive. It may satiate your fat cravings but you will definitely have a tough time keeping away from desserts and sweets.
Though the Keto diet can give us the results that we want to see, the long term negative effects and other things one has to experience in order to follow the Keto diet successfully make it a very impractical diet.
It is always advised that one can follow a balanced diet and correct their eating patterns when it comes to weight loss and management of medical conditions. Though the results take time, it is safe and a permanent solution to the problem.
